About Mundaring Power Lines Track
The Mundaring Power Lines Track is a free, public-access 4WD track in the Darling Range near Sawyers Valley, about 40km east of Perth off the Great Eastern Highway. It follows a power-line easement managed by Western Power but open to the 4WD community, and it is widely rated as one of the best technical off-road runs close to the city. The terrain is clay and rock โ rutted, steep and demanding, with the route rated medium to extreme depending on conditions and the lines you choose; a notable feature is "Gnarly Hill", a steep climb that rewards lockers and experience. This is not a guided or staffed park โ there is no booking and no fee โ so drivers bring their own suitably equipped 4WD and recovery gear and tackle it at their own risk.

No. The Mundaring Power Lines Track is a free, public-access power-line easement managed by Western Power but open to the 4WD community. There is no booking and no entry fee, and it is not a staffed park.
How hard is the track?
It is rated medium to extreme depending on conditions and the lines you choose. The terrain is clay and rock that is rutted and steep, low range is needed for almost the entire route, and obstacles like "Gnarly Hill" reward differential lockers and experience.
What vehicle and gear do I need?
Bring your own low-range 4WD; mud-terrain tyres and lowered tyre pressures (around 22 PSI) are recommended. Recovery is common, so carry recovery gear, a winch, an air compressor and a shovel, and do not travel alone.
Is it suitable for beginners?
No. The operator's own advice is that if you have never driven off-road before you should not attempt this track. It suits experienced drivers in well-equipped vehicles.
When is the best time to go?
It is open year-round, but the clay surface becomes very dangerous when wet and summer heat is intense, so choose your conditions carefully and check recent weather first.
